1989

Standing behind the colorfully-attired Johnny and Judy Banana is Byl Leet. In addition to his duties as the Electric Banana's soundman, Leet was also the guitarist for the metal band Diamond Haze, who graced the Banana's stage frequently during 1989-91.  Courtesy of Mike Bonello via Donny Zarra.

Johnny Banana had endeared himself to the kids to the point where the bands enjoyed promoting him as much as themselves.  Scroll down to see another poster promoting this same show.

Gig flyers pasted to poles were a common sight around Oakland and surrounding neighborhoods.  This flyer for the 11-10-89 show with the Popes and the Shroud was still visible, although weather-beaten, in January 1990 when this photo was snapped.  Today this rather charming marketing method has become a casualty of the internet.  Courtesy of Kevin Ruppenthal.
